Ladies, stop lifting soup cans!
Women lifting weights:
So this conversation came up with one of my friends. She said she doesn’t like lifting heavy weights because she was afraid of getting “big”. WTF!? 98% of you women don’t lift anywhere NEAR the lbs or weights you need to get huge muscles. Like, not even close!
Ladies, you will NOT get “big” lifting 10lbs, hell you wont even get big lifting 30lbs weights. When you lift 5lb, 8lb or 10 lbs weights you aren’t doing a damn thing. It is not enough weight to really activate any sort of muscle development. You are basically lifting soup cans.
Let’s be honest here. Some of you have purses that weigh more than 10lbs! You haven’t exactly become The Hulk lugging that thing around for the last few years right? Go ahead, go weight it and come back to the blog…..
Looking to burn fat fast?
Most of you are looking to burn fat. Reality is that building muscle burns more calories than just running on a treadmill for 2 hours. Which in turn if you are eating right, will force your body to eat the fat cells up to keep up with the new muscle being developed.
- FACT: Your body really DOES burn more calories maintaining muscle than it does maintaining fat.
- FACT: This means that YES, the more muscle you build, the more calories your body will naturally burn each day on its own.
- FACT: Which means that building muscle DOES increase your metabolism.
- FACT: And this all means that building muscle definitely has the potential to help you lose fat.
There are only two things you can do to a muscle. You can build it bigger or make it smaller. There is no such thing as “toning” a muscle. That is a word created by fitness videos for some clever marketing. And it worked. Now millions of women are somehow scared of looking like this:
OR
I don’t know about you guys/ladies but these ladies are fit! And they did not get there by lifting 5lb or 10lb weights. In fact in the first one she is holding at least 20lbs and that is just for a pose. I am sure she does more. You can see the muscles in her thighs which did not get there doing light weights with 20 reps. Her arms are well defined and her abs look sexy as hell too. They don’t look masculine which is what I am sure some of you are worried about. You need to lift a lot heavier weights than 10lbs to look masculine and look like a true female body builder.
Bottom line:
You should all be lifting as much weight as it takes you to lift 3 sets 8-10 reps. Notice I did not say doing 3 sets of 20-25 reps. You are not doing yourself a service and probably have noticed very little results (if any) lifting soup cans.
Starting with a low weight like 8lbs/10lbs and moving UP for each set is optimal. Again getting to that point where you can do your last set, COMFORTABLY up to 8-10 reps and still feel a burn or a bit of struggle on the last set.
Being strong and well defined femininely is sexy (as pictured above). Being really skinny with no muscle definition is not.
So ditch the soup can ladies. Grab some weights and get to work!
